A Unique Desert Beetle!
The tiny Stenocara beetle, found in the Namib Desert in South West Africa, could have a profound effect on the weather.
The answer lies in the shell. It's covered with bumps, which attract water. Minute drops roll down the beetle's back into a brush-like structure around its mouth, from which the beetle drinks.
It is a highly efficient water collector, which can be innovatively used around the world. The pattern of its shell can be easily replicated and manufactured commercially.
The pattern can be repeated on tent fabrics for water collection in the desert. And the application for fog dispersal is both practical and efficient.
It's yet another example of biomimetics, where scientists copy structures and mechanisms in living things, often with extraordinary results.
